The Desktop Mirage
Why the people who run these sites see a different website than their buyers do.
Approximately 71% meet Google’s 2.5 second desktop LCP threshold in a standardized lab test. Fewer than 4% meet it on mobile. Those are the same websites, measured the same way, in the same pass.
The gap stops being strange once you ask who is looking. The person who runs a showroom checks the website from the office, on a desktop, over the business’s own wired connection, with the site already sitting in their browser cache. What loads for them is quick. They are describing their experience accurately, and their experience is the first number.
Their buyers are standing in a competitor’s parking lot on a phone, on cell signal, arriving cold with nothing cached. That is the second number. Every internal check confirms the site is fine, because every internal check runs from the one context where it is.
What it means for dealer networks and the people advising them
A network that validates a website program on desktop will sign off on a program that fails in the field. The same holds for scorecards, vendor demos, and quarterly reviews. Anything sampled from a desk reports the healthy figure, and the healthy figure is real, which is what makes it so durable.
For a manufacturer advising a dealer, this is a credibility problem before it is a technical one. Tell an owner their website is slow, watch them pull it up on the office machine, and the conversation is over. The device has to be named first. The finding holds on a phone, and it holds on nearly every phone.
One limitation
Mobile and desktop were tested as separate environments under standardized conditions, so part of the distance between these two figures is the difference between the two test profiles rather than the sites. That bounds how much of the gap’s width belongs to the sites. It does not put the gap itself in question, because the mobile profile is the one built to resemble how these sites are actually reached, on a mobile connection with variable network quality and older hardware. The firmer caution is that both figures are lab measurements rather than field telemetry from live users, so they describe how the dealer layer behaves under a standard test, and no individual visitor’s experience is claimed from them.
